 Car-Care Advice
   by Nathan Freedenberg

I want to know the best cleaning products for my 1988 RX-7 Turbo II. Here's what I currently use. Please give me your input...

WHEEL CLEANER:
I currently use Armor All's Quicksilver. Will that hurt the clear-coat on the rims?

Just use slightly warm soapy water and a soft brush. Clear-coat is paint without any pigment. Would you use wheel cleaner on your hood? To make removal of brake dust easy, just wax the wheel. Simple on a 3rd gen. ;-)

TIRE CLEANER:
I currently use Flashback by Armor All. Will that dry and/or crack my tires?

Yes!! You should not use anything on the tires that contains any silicones or petrochemicals. The best way to treat tires is just to clean them with warm soapy water and a soft brush, then let them dry. I don't dress the tires at all.

TRIM CLEANER:
On the trim that runs along the bottom of the front of the car and the trim in the middle of the doors I use Armor All. If it rains and runs down the side of my car, will that hurt the paint job?

Armor All will remove the plasticizers from the trim and they will dry and crack. Wipe them with a damp cloth and let them be. They will last longer.

LEATHER MOISTURIZER:

Lexol is hands-down the best cleaner and conditioner, save for the really expensive hard-to-use stuff in the tack shop of your local equestrian center. Two separate products; the cleaner works very well, and the conditioner will keep it supple. They will, however, leave your car with the distinctive scent of dead cow if you leave it in the sun after an application.

FRONT DASH PANEL:
    Armor All?

See door trim ...add UV and heat exposure from windshield to hasten degradation.

ENGINE CLEANER:
I'm currently using Never-Dull by Eagle One.

Try a citrus-based cleaner. They generally work better, are non-toxic and you don't need an environmental suit to use them. Better for your soft parts (hoses, etc.), also.

QUESTION:
Is it okay to use Armor All under the hood on those parts that are black? Since rotaries run hotter than most engines, has Armor All been known to catch on fire? If so, what should I use?

Armor All will cause the same drying and cracking under hood but only faster from heat. Just wipe them clean with a damp soft cloth. With regular engine cleaning with the citrus based cleaner your under hood black parts will stay clean.

QUESTION:
I was considering using rubbing alcohol in combiation with a Q-Tip to clean some of the cracks and crevices on the inside of the car. Is this safe?

Alcohol will also hasten the loss of plasticizers.

Not to be preachy, but you don't need that mass produced, over-hyped stuff. A simple car-cleaning regimen will keep it clean, better running (we all know a clean car runs better) and keep it cosmetically in great condition. In concours events the car that is clean and straight with natural looking rubber will finish in the points. A car dripping with cosmetic aids is hiding flaws.
