Pre-Mixing Oil & Gasoline
   by Tom Bejma

[The following article is provided as instruction on how to properly pre-mix oil into your rotary's gas tank, not why. It is not meant as an endorsement of the practice. While some view the extra margin of safety as cheap insurance (and Rotary Rocket doesn't believe any harm can come from pre-mixing oil and gas), it costs money and takes extra time and effort. The OE metering oil pumps seem to work just fine for the vast majority of Rx-7 owners.]

Many racers eliminate the metering pump and run premixed gas and oil to eliminate the possible failure of the pump and to ensure adequate apex seal lubrication. I've used various different grades of 2-stroke oil in my "race only" '80 RX7 for the past three racing seasons. I find that it gives me a little more top end power. I haven't noticed any advantages to any certain brand, but synthetic probably burns a little cleaner and leaves less build up. Besides, just take a look inside the carb and watch how the oil is "metered". It just drips into the intake manifold and gravity carries it down the tunnels where it probably just "drips" into the rotor housing. Doesn't sound to efficient to me. I'd rather have my oil atomized, like the gas, which gives a much better distribution (and is 100% reliable).

Don't mess with the Pettit stuff. They just re-bottle (and mark up) Klotz R-50 and call it "Protek R" (I know, I bought a case). Any motorcycle dealer (except Harley-Davidson) will have a wide selection of two stroke oil. Mix it at about 100:1.
