Speedometer Swap
   by David Rock
   rockd@u.arizona.edu

[The following article tells how to swap out that pesky 85-mph speedometer found in newer 1st Gen. Rx-7's and replacing them with a 120-mph model from an earlier first gen. -RR]

Not that hard to replace. Two screws up front hold on a trim plate, two cables connect at rear of unit, also some wire connections in back. The hardest part is the two screws that hold the unit on in the rear. You have to be a contortionist to get them out. They are up really high in the dash, and they are Philip's head screws. With your head down by the pedals looking up, you should be able to shine a flashlight up there and see them. Once these four screws, wires and cables are removed, the unit should slide out.

There are also clips on the front that should just pull out. Once this is done, you can either replace the whole unit or take the speedo out and just replace that, but I haven't just replaced it so I can't tell you hard that is. Took me about hour and half to do first, time. Took about ten minutes to do second time.
